Oscar Nominations: 2017

Oscar nominees for the 89th annual awards were announced this morning during a live streamed event filmed in six cities around the world.
The nominations were mostly predictable, due to previous wins at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. However, there were also many snubs and some surprise and well deserved nominations in several of the categories.
Michael Shannon beat out Nocturnal Animals co-star Aaron Taylor Johnson for a Best Supporting Actor nod.  Mel Gibson landed himself a Best Director nomination for his war drama, Hacksaw Ridge. Andrew Garfield,  landed a Best Actor nod for his role in the film.
Amy Adams did not get a nomination for her much talked about lead role in the Sci-Fi flick, Arrival, but the movie did pick up several nods includig Best Picture and Best Director for Canadian Denis Villeneuve.

La La Land

Of course, the favourite La La Land scored with a record-tying 14 nominations (on par with “Titanic” and “All About Eve”). “Arrival” and “Moonlight” followed up with eight each. In other good news: After two years of #OscarsSoWhite, 35 percent of this year’s acting nominees are people of color, including previous winners Denzel Washington (“Fences”) and Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”).
The Academy Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel will air live on ABC on Feb. 26.
Canada leaves it's mark as well with a nice representation of Oscar nominations:
Howard Barish, co-producer (13th), Documentary (Feature)
Sylvain Bellemare (Arrival)Sound Editing
Bernard Gariépy Strobl and Claude La Haye (Arrival)Sound Mixing
