Tim Meadows is not just a ladies man! The veteran comedian, actor and one of the longest-running cast members on Saturday Night Live is starring in his own show. Catch him on The Goldbergs: 1990-Something Spin-Off.
Tim Meadows may best be known for his ten seasons on Saturday Night Live, memorably spoofing personalities racing from O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson to Tiger Woods and Oprah Winfrey. His original SNL character Leon Phelps, "The Ladies’ Man," was eventually adapted into a film. His many other TV and film credits include The Office, Mean Girls, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Meadows has had a recurring role on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, playing Mr. Glascott, the high school's parrot-owning guidance counsellor. He also continues to perform improv in Los Angeles and Chicago.
The special takes some of the characters of the series into a new decade and picks up where the Goldberg family leaves off at William Penn Academy in the 1990s. Former teacher and now head of school, John Glascott (Meadows), leads a faculty of teachers with wildly different views on how to mentor students and recruits his tough-as-nails sister Lucy (Nia Long) to join his staff and enroll her teenage daughters Felicia and Gigi as new students. Lucy is desperate to ensure they avoid the social pitfalls of high school and finds herself torn between Glascott’s nurturing and communicative approach to parenting and Coach Mellor’s tough-guy belief that physical competition brings out the best in students. Even Beverly Goldberg [Wendi McLendon-Covey] comes to visit the school’s staff, despite all her kids having already graduated, and can’t help but meddle one last time.
The episode stars Tim Meadows as John Glascott, Bryan Callen as Coach Rick Mellor, Nia Long as Lucy Somers, Rachel Crow as Felicia and Summer Parker as Gigi. Guest stars include Ana Gasteyer as Miss Cinoman, and Octavia Spencer as the voice-over of Felicia.
I spoke with Tim Meadows via satellite from Atlanta where we discussed his new show, life as a comedian, his days on SNL and some very special mentors.
The Goldbergs: 1990-Something is a spin-off of The Goldbergs airing Wednesday, January 24th at 8PM (ET/PT) on ABC TV Network, streaming and on demand.
