With the huge success of author Veronica Roth's Divergent Series novels, there was no doubt that Hollywood would come a calling turning them into smash hits for the big screen. The first installment, Divergent had huge numbers at the box office (over 300 million worldwide) and the film makers are hoping that the next film, Insurgent will follow suit.
As the sequel to Divergent, it continues the story of Tris Prior and the dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. Following the events of the previous novel, a war now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. While trying to save the people that she loves, Tris faces questions of grief, forgiveness, identity, loyalty, politics, and love. The background to the story, revealed in the first novel of the trilogy, explains how Chicago in the far future is divided into five factions: Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the peaceful, Candor for the honest, Dauntless for the brave, and Erudite for the intelligent. Those who are tested with the equal aptitude for more than one faction are deemed "Divergent".
The films star Shailene Woodley as the fearless Tris, Theo James as "Four", Miles Teller as Peter and Ansel Elgort as Caleb. Divergent has catapulted these actors into stardom and there is no doubt that Insurgent will push them to the next level of fame.
While Shailene was quite confident going back to the set to shoot Insurgent, she quickly realized that some extra effort was required and that it wasn't going to be as easy as she anticipated.
"Getting back into Tris mode was much more difficult than I thought because I was in a different head space myself, I had grown in my personal life," Woodley told me during our recent interview in Los Angeles.
While playing Tris again may have been a challenge, the 23 year old actress says she couldn't wait to get back to doing her own stunts. As a matter of fact she got so fit shooting Insurgent, dropping to do 200 push ups is effortless. Not to mention those chiseled shoulders!
I had the opportunity to chat with Insurgent stars, Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and newcomer to the franchise, Oscar winner Octavia Spencer in Los Angeles about working on the film and how life has changed for them.
