The DC Universe is getting a bit of a makeover!

“Titans” is a new live-action drama series that follows a group of young soon-to-be super heroes: Dick Grayson, a.k.a Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and many others. The series stars Brenton Thwaites, Minka Kelly, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, and Alan Ritchson.

It’s been more than 20 years since the world last saw a live-action version of Batman’s famous sidekick Robin (that was Chris O’Donnell in Batman & Robin). But now, Robin returns to television as the leader of his own team in the DC original series, Titans, based on one of the most popular comic book teams ever – the Teen Titans.

In Titans – which premieres on the new DC Universe streaming service -- Dick Grayson (aka Robin) emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Dove, Starfire, Raven and many others recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. The series comes from the powerhouse producing trio of Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman.

The Robin that Thwaites is playing in the series is not a wise-cracking sidekick or a loyal partner to Batman. The darker take on the character has Dick Grayson (Robin's secret identity) leaving Wayne Manor for a life of his own. He splits his time between being a police detective and leading a group of angst-filled heroes in Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), Dove (Minka Kelly) and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Look for other characters from the DC Comics world to make appearances.

Thwaites says he went into the project not knowing very much about Robin's darker side. "This was a whole new world for me," Thwaites told me during our interview. "It’s definitely a different Robin from the 'Batman and Robin' movie and especially the TV show which was pretty campy. I knew nothing about him teaming up with the Titans until I read the script. This Robin is trying to break away from the life of working with Batman. He's trying to find his own personality and become his own person.”

Playing Dick Grayson/Robin gave Thwaites quite the challenge as an actor. Although a lot of the roles Thwaites has played over the years have been demanding both emotionally and physically this one really gave him a mental and physical workout.

The Aussie actor and rising Hollywood star has starred in such films as Maleficent alongside Angelina Jolie, The Giver with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales starring Johnny Depp.

Titans also stars Minka Kelly as Dawn Granger (aka “Dove”). Minka won the hearts of audiences as "Lyla Garrity" on NBC's hit show, Friday Night Lights, and continued her TV success with another NBC hit, Parenthood. Her other television work includes Man Seeking Woman, Almost Human, Charlie’s Angels and The Path.

“Titans” has already secured a second season renewal before its first season has aired.

Warner Bros. Television, which produces the series, made the announcement at New York Comic-Con. The first season of “Titans” is set to debut on the recently-launched DC Universe streaming service on Oct. 12.
