The hilarious and heartfelt comedy, One Day At A Time, follows three generations of a Cuban-American family navigating the ups and downs of life in Los Angeles. All together under one roof, the Alvarez family includes mom Penelope (Machado), an army veteran and nurse practitioner; her social activist daughter Elena, her popular son Alex, and her old-school Cuban mother Lydia (Rita Moreno). One Day At A Time ran for three seasons on Neflix. After being cancelled, the show triggered an outpouring of audience support and has been revived by Pop TV for the fourth season.
Justina Machado recently completed filming on Netflix’s Sorta Like a Rock Star, directed by Brett Haley. Additional feature credits include The Purge: Anarchy, The Accidental Husband opposite Uma Thurman, Bernard Tevenier’s In the Electric Mist opposite Tommy Lee Jones, and the independent film Pedro, which debuted at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. Her recent television credits include recurring opposite Gina Rodriguez in the CW comedy series, Jane the Virgin, voicing the character ‘Carmen’ in Disney’s animated series, Elena of Avalor, Superstore and Queen of the South. She is perhaps most well known for her role as ‘Vanessa Diaz’ in HBO’s Six Feet Under.
I spoke with Justina via satellite from her home in Los Angeles about the show being saved , their loyal fans and working with legends Norman Lear and Rita Moreno.
