Queen of the South - Alice Braga Interview
/Brazilian born actress Alice Braga stars in USA Network’s (Bravo in Canada) Queen of the South as Teresa Mendoza. This adaptation of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s best-selling novel, La Reina Del Sur, follows Teresa’s journey as she learns the tools of the trade and positions herself as the leader of the very drug cartel that had her on the run.
Before her grand television debut, Braga received critical and international recognition for her stirring performance in City of God, which helped catapult the film to multiple Golden Globe® and Oscar® nominations. The multiple-award winning actress’ other credits include Lower City, The Milky Way, By Way of Helena, The Shack, and many others.
In Season 1 of Queen of the South, Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) was forced to go on the run and do whatever it took to survive the Mexican drug cartel that had her marked for death following the murder of her boyfriend Guero (Jon Ecker), who was killed while making a drug deal.
Tough gal that she is, she managed to cross the border from Mexico into Texas where she was taken in by Camilia Vargas (Veronica Falcón), the wife of the man who is trying to kill her — Don Epifanio Vargas (Joaquim de Almeida) — who has her own drug concern in Texas.
With all that has happened to Teresa as a result of Guero’s death — her effort to make it across the desert and winding up near death; becoming a mule for Camilia Vargas and almost getting arrested by the DEA and murdered by Camilia’s rivals; and the death of Teresa’s best friend Brenda (Justina Machado) as the two women plotted to get out of the clutches of the cartel — imagine her shock at discovering that Guero is still alive, which was revealed in the Season 1 finale.
I spoke with Alice Braga via satellite from Los Angeles to talk about what is in store for season 2 of Queen of The South and whether or not she gets to keep any of the amazing clothes she gets to wear throughout the series!
Queen of the South airs on Thursday nights on USA Network. Season 2 will premiere on July 18 at 9pm on BRAVO NETWORK in Canada.
